BLOGNOLOGY | GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Saturday, 29 November 2014
This post was inspired by my friend who is thinking of starting up her own blog. As I have only been blogging for just over a year now and still class as a newbie blogger, I can give you some hints and tips that I have found useful when starting up your own blog. I have researched a lot of tips from the "bigger bloggers" however I feel that they always miss some out so today I am going to tell you some of my hints and tips for starting up.
This post is going to be quite a lengthy one so here is just a warning!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLATFORM FOR YOU
Firstly, you want to choose which platform you want to be on as the two main ones are Blogger and Wordpress. Most bloggers start off on Blogger as it is a lot easier to use when it comes to designing the look of your blog but also you can still mess around with the HTML if you fancy. However, with Wordpress, you have to put money in from the beginning if you want custom HTML layouts which you don't want to be doing when you've first started on this big adventure. People do often switch over to Wordpress after a while.

LAYOUT
The next tip I suggest is to get a good layout as this is what will draw people in. If you aren't good at HTML then maybe you have a friend who is and can help you with doing your layout. If not, then there are a lot of options which are out there including Bloggers own templates. I usually find that having large images on a blog draws me in the most and I usually go back to those blogs as I will find them most memorable.

DECIDE ON A BLOG NAME
Then, - one of the most important in my opinion - you will need to choose your blog name. Alot of people pick one and then instantly regret it, some people don't. Just make sure that it is easy to remember however different and unique. People will want to visit your blog a lot more if they can remember your name.

ORGANISATION IS KEY
Make sure you keep organized from the beginning. Me and  a lot of bloggers I have spoken to have all said that they regret not being organized from the start as that would have helped them out a lot more. I now keep an organizer full of ideas, post schedules and more. Also, make sure you have a way to note take with you all times. Whether it's using the notepad on your phone, using Google Keep (my personal favourite) or using notepads and pens, you never know when inspiration is going to strike! I would also suggest scheduling posts so that you can make sure that you are posting frequently, maybe you want to make a schedule so that you can post on the same days each week at the same time, this will then make your readers aware of when you post.

PHOTOGRAPHY
I also suggest that you learn some basic photography so that you can take high quality pictures from the beginning. This is another tip that I wish that I knew about when I first started as I was taking pictures on a phone and they all came out really blurry. Simple things such as the Rule of Thirds and lighting are needed to be taken into consideration.

DON'T FEEL PRESSURED TO SPEND LOTS OF MONEY

What I discovered when I first started out was that the big time bloggers are always saying "today I bought............" over and over again. However, I found that being a newbie blogger, you can't actually afford to go out and spend lots of money of new make up and clothes to keep up with the trends and I for one felt quite pressured to to this when I couldn't exactly afford it as I had no job. Instead, I would suggest to just blog about things that you own already or if you do have a source of money then go nuts! But don't feel pressured into keeping in with trends.

SOCIAL MEDIA - GET CONNECTED
I don't know where I would be if I wasn't on social media sites as it is an amazing way to connect with brands and more importantly other bloggers. I have made many great friends through Social Media, especially Twitter. Although blogging is a fairly competitive market, it also seems to be the friendliest. So I would suggest to sign up to sites which you think are the best for you and make some friends! Also, make sure that you sign up to Bloglovin as this is an AMAZING way to help you find blogs similar to your own and you can follow them and people can follow you to keep up to date with your posts! I would also ensure that you put links to your social media sites on your blog and also at the end of each post you create, this is to ensure that you can drive your following back to your links and keep you updated with any new post you make!

PROMOTION
Don't be afraid to promote yourself on these different sites. If you make a great post which you are proud of, then don't be afraid to shout it from the roof tops!

.........and finally,

BE YOURSELF
Be yourself. This is one of the most important things about blogging. Don't feel that you have to stick to one type of blog i.e. fashion or lifestyle. If you have an idea for a post, then go for it!
